ABSTRACT |
The purpose of the present study is to examine the effect of EMLA on the survival of a random pattern flap in the rat. 20 rats were divided in 2 groups at random. Modified McFarlane skin flaps were elevated from the dorsum of the rats. In experimental group, topical EMLA cream was applied on the flap for 4 days whereas in control group EMLA carrier cream was applied with the same method. On the 4th day after surgery, the areas of flap necrosis were measured and percentages of flap necrosis were calculated. The mean percentages of the flap necrosis in two groups were 27.29 and 26.21 percent, respectively which are not significant statistically. Topical lidocaine administration promotes the vasodilation, however it has only a minimal and temporary effect on the vascular network which does not enhance the survival rate of the flap.
