Literature Review of Antibiotics Use in Plastic Surgical Wound

ABSTRACT

Whether to use prophylactic antibiotics to prevent postoperative infection in plastic and reconstructive surgery is still not clearly defined in the literature. The aim of our study was to provide guidelines for proper antibiotic use on the basis of a comprehensive literature review. To investigate the worldwide use of antibiotics, a tiered review of world literature was undertaken using Medline and EMBase as the primary search engines. Thirty-seven relevant articles were critically reviewed. The individual report and information was analyzed and summarized into several categories. We divided the plastic surgical fields into 4 groups (clean, clean-contaminated, contaminated, dirty) according to the wound status and described the associated factors in the table. It shows some differences among the groups in the infection risk, bacterial culture, antibiotics choice and its duration. This study provide information and trend about the current use of antibiotics in plastic surgery on the basis of a worldwide literature reviews. In addition, it is hoped that interest in further research in this area will be stimulated. (J Korean Wound Management Soc 2008;4:1-5)
