ABSTRACT
Dermabond (2-Octyl Cyanoacrylate) is the most popular and widely used topical tissue adhesive (TSA). The cyanoacrylates were initially developed by a Germen chemist in 1949. After the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of 2-Octyl Cyanoacrylate in 1998, many clinical trials approved their effectiveness and safety in wound closure. Dermabond is composed of long-chain deritives (8-carbon Octylcyanoacrylate) which have more tensile strength and stability than short-chain cyanoacrylate. 2-Octyl Cyanoacrylates can be used in various clinical wounds from simple traumatic laceration to long full-thickness surgical incision. They give many functional and cosmetic advantages in wound closure over traditional wound closure methods, but still have limitation such as lack of enough strength and vulnerability in wet condition. Dermabond is expected to be used in more wide-spectrum clinical indications in the future, and there must be more studies and clinical trials for effective clinical application.
