ABSTRACT
This pilot study was performed to evaluate an effect of a protocol for prevention and treatment of incontinenceassociated dermatitis in the neurologic patients with fecal incontinence. This quasi-experimental study was designedfor a nonequivalent control group study with convenience sample from Aug. 1 to Aug. 14. 2013. 8 Participants in theexperimental group were treated according to a protocol, including the use of a skin cleanser and 8 participantsin the control group received water cloth with 3% dimethicone skin protectant. Score of perineal assessment tool (PAT),IAD Healing score (IADH), subepidermal moisture level, and corneum stratum hydration level were evaluated by WOCN.There was no significant difference on IAD prevalence (experimental: 20% vs control: 33.3%, P=.576). A significantprotocol effect on IADH was found (Z=2.48, P=.015). There was no significant difference on subepidermal moisturelevel and corneum stratum hydration level between two groups. These findings provide indicative evidence for theuse of skin cleanser and skin protectant as an effective care to treat IAD. (J Korean Wound Management Soc2014;10:75-79)
