ABSTRACT
Silver has a strong antimicrobial effect against a broad range of micro-organisms. But it has low toxicity to normal cells & induces few resistance. Various silver-containing dressing materials are receiving attention in the treatment of burns, and wounds. But, in Korea, silver containing wound dressing materials have not been developed yet. This study focuses on the design and evaluation of silver-containing wound dressings. Nanocrystalline silver colloid, which is composed of 3 nm sized particles on average, was developed. This silver colloid was diluted to 3, 10, 20, 50 100 ppm and its antimicrobial properties were examined. And, wool textile products were immerse in the 20 ppm of silver colloid. After dyeing & processing, antimicrobial properties were examined. The antimicrobial test of silver colloid & processed wool textile products showed significant antimicrobial properties. Next, 30 ppm of silver colloid were sprayed on commercially available polyurethane foam dressings (Medifoam). After drying & sterilization with ethylene oxide gas, antimicrobial properties were examined using the method for disinfectant- such as povidone and chlorohexidine- in Seoul National University Hospital laboratory. The test did not show significant antiseptic properties. These results suggest that additional studies designed to determine the antimicrobial properties of the dressing materials are needed.
